Discover the Barceló Funchal Old Town – Jewel in the heart of Madeira

The Barceló Funchal Old Town, the latest addition to the Spanish Barceló Hotel Group‘s portfolio, is a luxurious five-star hotel in the heart of Funchal’s old town in Madeira. The lavish restoration combined six historic 17th-century buildings into an elegant ensemble of 111 rooms and suites, while preserving the original facades and floors.

Throughout the facility, antique objects have been incorporated into the interior design, reflecting the history of the region. Archaeologists discovered remains from the colonial period, such as pottery, which were refurbished and displayed in the hotel.

Exquisite cuisine and unique views

Guests can look forward to two restaurants, a lobby bar and the B-Heaven Rooftop Bar, which is adjacent to the pool for drinks and snacks. The breathtaking view includes both the Atlantic Ocean and the old town of Funchal. Barceló Funchal Old Town offers three variable meeting rooms and a modern gym to meet the diverse needs of guests.

The rich history behind the buildings

The six historic buildings that made up the hotel have a fascinating past. One was the headquarters of the traditional factory Oliveiera Bordados Enmaderienses, while another belonged to the famous Blandy family, one of the founders of the Madeira wine trade.

Architecture and design in harmony with tradition and modernity

The architects placed great emphasis on preserving original components of the buildings by integrating centuries-old natural stone and wood into the modern ensemble. The interior combines tradition and modernity, picking up local crafts such as basketry and Madeiran embroidery.

The hotel’s lobby and reception were inspired by Madeira’s Laurisilva Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Its bay leaves can be found in the decoration, which provides a fresh, natural appearance.
