Leipzig Christmas Market 2023 with many highlights

Philipp Kirschner

The Leipzig Christmas Market 2023, one of the largest and most beautiful festivities of its kind in Europe, will unfold its splendour from 28 November to 23 December.

With a tradition dating back to 1458, it not only forms the centrepiece of pre-Christmas festivities in Germany, but is also a reflection of Leipzig’s rich history and culture. Just like 500 years ago, it blends harmoniously into the fascinating historical backdrop of the city centre. This year, the Christmas market promises to be an unforgettable experience for visitors from all over the world, with over 300 originally decorated stalls.

A kaleidoscope of cultures and traditions

The main area of the market, traditionally located in front of the Old Town Hall, forms the centre of the action. An imposing 21-metre-high Christmas tree stands here, and the market stage presents an extensive Christmas programme. In addition to this traditional centrepiece, the market offers an impressive variety of attractions. From the fairytale land on Augustusplatz to the breathtaking view over Leipzig from the 38 metre high Ferris wheel – Leipzig’s Christmas market has something for everyone.

A particular highlight is the international presence: the Finnish village with its culinary specialities such as glögi and flamed salmon and the South Tyrolean village, where Schüttelbrot, Kaminwurzen and Winzerglühwein await visitors. Just a few metres further on, it becomes international.

Historical and culinary highlights

The historical dimension of the market is particularly noticeable in the medieval market “Alt Leipzig” on the Naschmarkt, where art and craft traditions are kept alive. The market spoils its visitors with over 100 culinary delights – from oven-fresh pretzels and Pulsnitz gingerbread to Leipziger Stollen.

Musical and cultural accompaniment

Not forgetting the cultural aspects of the market. Every day, the traditional trombone players play music from the balcony of the Old Town Hall, while the world-famous St Thomas’ Boys Choir enriches the Advent season with concerts in St Thomas’ Church.
